SLA was established in 1982 when eight sign language interpreters decided to pool their resources and formed a company in order to meet the specific needs of their clients, consumers and fellow interpreters.
Janet L. Bailey, President & CEO, and one of the original founders, remembers: "We shared a dream to create a service company able to provide quality interpreting services in the most efficient way possible. As interpreters, we felt it was important to improve the working conditions and employment opportunities for professional interpreters."
Today, SLA is still interpreter owned and run and at present has a diverse staff that includes:

- Staff interpreters who are fluent in Spanish and able to provide tri-lingual services for our consumers.
- A nationally recognized Mentor Program for interpreters
- Over 200 qualified part-time interpreters
- 20 customer-service focused administrative employees
